Building Your Own Bunk Bed

The thought of building your own bunk bed might seem like a joke but, it can be done. If you have the right tools, supplies, and a set of instructions you should be able to construct your own set of bunk beds.

Step 1. Select the style of bunk bed you want to build. Bunk beds come in various styles. You could build a futon, loft, L shape, or basic bunk bed. The type unit you build will depend on your needs for the room. Once you know the style that you want you can move to step two

Step 2. Get your tools and buy your materials. You are going to need wood. 2×6s and nice plywood are the types of wood you will need. In addition, you also need fasteners. You are going to need carriage bolts (these bolts have a flat head that will not stick out). You will also need nuts and washers. Your instructions should tell you how much of each supply you need. One note: Buy good quality materials. Build a nice bed that will last a long time.

Step 3. Lay out your pieces, give the instruction manual another read-through, and cut your wood according to your instructions. Put all your needed tools, such as a drill, circular saw, sander, and hammer, within easy reach. Don't underestimate a good helper in your project. Follow each step listed in your instruction manual, and keep in mind the important safety precautions. And don't forget, building is the fun part!

Have fun with your venture. Not everybody will take the initiative to build their own piece of furniture. Trust me, once the bunk beds are complete you will stand back and gaze at your achievements for hours.
